The story behind Wake Up City

One morning during my senior year of college, I found myself in the CAS Garden of UA&P. I was at school at 6 am, wearing corporate attire, nervous and excited to present my group’s pitch to the day’s client.

I was sleepy and exhausted from the work and grind of my course but despite that, I managed to feel happy. I sat down on one of the metal chairs in the garden and looked at the buildings across my school and saw the sunrise kissing them. Of course, I stopped to take a photo for safekeeping (yes the same photo in this blog post). I don’t know why I never noticed them before given that I’m usually at school at that hour but just looking at that sparked a thought in my head. This life we are given is tough to manage. We all want to reach our goals but are weighed down by our own intrusive thoughts. So we put ourselves to sleep thinking it will be different the next day. The fact is, it won’t be different unless you wake up, look at these challenges and see springboards instead of roadblocks. That’s how this song started Realizing first that no one is watching you And no one is waiting for you to fail Make all the mistakes you want!

Your life is not a perfect show. It’s that type of show that only starts getting good by the 2nd season So make that track! Paint that painting! Join that improv class! Start that business! Go on that vacation! Play in that gig! Write that poem! Tell your crush how you feel! Wake up and get up! This world is yours! - Jose
